K-pop stars wear wrong Rangers shirts at Texas gig

STAYC appeared in Dallas, the home city of the Texas Rangers baseball team, but their attempt to win over local sports fans went awry

A popular K-pop group appears to have mixed up their sports teams after performing in Rangers tops at a concert in Texas.

STAYC, a South Korean girl group, wore the football tops while performing in Dallas last week.

It is thought they had intended to wear the kit of the city’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, in an effort to endear themselves to the locals. Instead the band were pictured wearing Rangers shirts from the 1996-97 season, branded with McEwan’s Lager, which had been fashioned into crop tops.

Rangers fans celebrated the girl group’s mix-up. “Rangers are the kings of K-Pop,” one said on Twitter/X, while others wrote “OK, I will buy all their albums” and “Always liked STAYC”.

STAYC are on their first world tour, dubbed Teenfresh, during which they will perform in the US, Mexico, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.

The band, whose members are Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon and J, made their debut in 2020 with the album Star To A Young Culture, which is also the group’s acronym. They will appear in the UK next month for the Korea on Stage In London concert alongside other K-pop acts.

The Rangers shirt, once worn by Paul Gascoigne and Ally McCoist, was the team’s home kit during the season in which they won the Scottish Premier Division and the Scottish League Cup in a 4-3 victory against Hearts.

The Texas Rangers, meanwhile, are enjoying a week to remember.

Last night they blasted their way to the World Series, defeating the Houston Astros 11-4 in the deciding seventh game of the American League Championship Series. They will play against either the Philadelphia Phillies or the Arizona Diamondbacks for the biggest prize in baseball.

Established in 1961, the Rangers are the oldest Major League Baseball team never to have won the World Series.

Retro Glasgow football tops have been sported by K-pop stars before. In 2018 two members of Stray Kids wore vintage Celtic jerseys in a music video for their single My Pace.

Members of the nine-piece boy band also wore the retro football tops for the cover of their EP I Am Who.

The Scottish amateur football team Haddington Town also had a case of mistaken identity last month. The club, nicknamed the Goats, was stunned to discover that Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX appeared to have appropriated its badge.

A photo released by the company seemed to show an almost identical version of the goat from the club’s badge on a launch platform. The image showed the white outline of a goat in front of a thin crescent moon alongside the SpaceX logo.
