Who leads in the fashion stakes at The Open 2017?

Justin Rose: split trousers and trainer socks

In general, fashion frowns on trainer socks. My industry is of the opinion that either you go bare and flaunt your ankles or you embrace the cheerful uncoolness of a proper cotton sock. On the other hand, how can we punish someone who is merely trying to avoid athlete’s foot? Verdict: Birdie

Jordan Spieth: an old-school gilet

Padded gilet, thermal-looking long-sleeved T-shirt, middle-distance gaze; I suspect Spieth is channelling the great 2017 trend known as “gorpcore”. If he’s not doing that, on the other hand, then this is just a very boring outfit. Verdict: Birdie

Russell Knox: blue bobble hat

We can’t blame Knox for wanting to keep his ears warm, but I’m afraid this hat screams “conference freebie”. Presumably he’s left his branded clipboard, ballpoint pen and tin of mints in the car. Verdict: Bogey

Ryan Moore: peaked bobble hat (or cap and bobble hat combo) . . .

At first glance Moore appears to be wearing an odd, peaked bobble hat, but on closer investigation, I think it’s two hats worn together — in other words, he’s experimenting with layering. This is a clever styling trick, and one that will really pay off as we go into autumn. Bravo Ryan. Verdict: Birdie

Jason Day: hi-tops and jogging bottoms

In hi-tops and jogging bottoms, Day has gone for a contemporary athleisure look as favoured by rappers and middle-aged men who are trying to hold on to their fading youth. It’s so sporty, in fact, that it almost convinced me that golf is a sport. Verdict: Birdie

Justin Thomas: tie, cardigan and open-neck shirt

What a confused style message from Thomas here: a tie juxtaposed against an undone top button; a smart white brogue clashing with a baseball cap. What are you trying to say, Justin? Verdict: Bogey
