Where to drink when you are deer stalking in Richmond

There’s something for everyone on a summer’s day in Richmond, whether it’s communing with the swans on the river, skulking around the hill hoping for a glimpse of an ancient rock star, or just doing what the locals do and driving round and round the park in your 4x4 in case those deer are fiercer than they look. Whatever your enthusiasm, it’s all thirsty work, and luckily there’s a pub at the top of the hill that can’t be beaten as a place to take the air after your outdoor exertions

WHAT’S IT LIKE?

Just a few doors along from Jerry Hall’s place, the Roebuck comes as close as possible to rivalling her ex-husband as a Richmond institution. It’s done out pleasantly on the inside and staffed by a very friendly crew, but its biggest pull is the superb view across Petersham Meadows and a meandering stretch of the Thames below. From the window tables on two floors the relaxing punter is treated to probably the most bucolic outlook of any pub in London: just trees, water, distance and the odd couple pulling up outside for a quick picturesque canoodle. If the weather’s good and you’re confident about making it across the road with a handful of drinks, you can get even closer to the landscape on the gravel terrace opposite, with the added advantage of being able to look over your shoulder and practically see Jerry doing the washing-up.

WHAT TO DRINK?

The usual equation of great location with God-awful drinks is thankfully not in effect at the Roebuck, where a good pair of regular beers, Fuller’s London Pride and Adnams, are joined by a range of guest ales that can include such award-winners as Hop Back’s Summer Lightning and Harviestoun’s magnificently hoppy Bitter & Twisted. With beers like those and the best view in town, it’s surprising Bambi gets any visitors at all.
