What's new in the world of hair, beauty and skin

All the latest beauty accessories and products, from Guido Palau's conehead hair on the catwalk. Plus, Lauren Laverne on her best products

Mad March hair

There was a seriously hairy moment on the Jil Sander catwalk last month. We mean hairy in a good way, of course — even though there was a touch of the Coneheads about it. What wizardry Guido Palau infused into the models’ locks. No traditional up-do or loosely curled locks here. Oh, no. Instead, the style was a blend of... what, exactly? Part ultimate comb-over, part ultimate bowl “cut”, the result was a jaw-dropper. Guido, we salute you.

There are several beauty pros who swear they can tell a face that follows a Crème de la Mer skincare routine — the benefits, they say, are many.

Certainly, we’ve found its serums to be always top-notch, and the latest, Radiant Serum, is no exception: it does just what it says. £215

I’m having a course of microdermabrasion before my wedding in August. My skin has improved, but it’s red and sensitive after each session, making me feel self-conscious at work. Can you recommend anything to help the irritation?
Lucy, by email

Microdermabrasion and other noninvasive procedures are becoming routine, and cosmetics companies have wised up to the market for products to soothe and strengthen post-treatment skin. We’re impressed with Nubo’s new Post Injection Treatment (£48, from Harrods, from March 25). It contains lacto peptide to help regenerate traumatised skin, and vitamins K and P to strengthen capillaries and reduce redness and bruising. If you’re having regular microdermabrasion, stick to gentle products at home. Cetaphil is recommended by cosmetic surgeons — the packaging isn’t fancy, but the products work (from £9.18, boots.com).

Your favourite tip of the week

Skip wax and add definition to hair by spritzing hairspray on to your fingertips and pinching and twisting the ends of your hair.

In search of a nail colour palette-cleanser? Look no further than the latest colours from Maybelline’s Forever Strong Professional nail polishes. The delicate pinks (we love Powder Rose and Nude Rose) and nude hues (try Rose Sand) feel refreshingly elegant — and this stuff lasts well too. £3.10, from Boots

Lauren Laverne, presenter

I’m an indie kid really.

My look is a passionate civil partnership between Debbie Harry and Kim Gordon.

After I had my first son, my skin went nuts, so I’m a stickler for good skincare. I combine Clinique 3-Step with sun block, and Aromatherapy Associates Overnight Repair Mask — you sleep in it and wake up looking and smelling delicious! Laura Mercier foundations are incredible. I also like Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Chocolate Cherry. I do my nails with Essie’s Licorice.

I could live without make-up, but I wouldn’t want to.

At school, I briefly toyed with the idea of becoming a nun.

The lack of lippy loomed large in the cons column.
