What Venetians watch

Andrea Deirossi, works in an internet café

I’m not a great fan of modern Hollywood films because I find them too formulaic. I prefer Italian Seventies trash movies as well as The Blues Brothers, The Doors and Natural Born Killers, films where you forget that you’re in a cinema. You’re actually in the movie.

Paula Scanferla, saleswoman

I love films and go to the cinema all the time. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are my favourite actors and my favourite film starred them both, Far and Away. It’s romantic and quite exciting at the same time. I think I was more disappointed than they were when they split up.

Marina Pasini, retired

Almodóvar — he’s an excellent director. I loved Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. I don’t like mainstream Hollywood films because they’re too violent or about drug addicts, although I did enjoy Brokeback Mountain. Asian cinema isn’t as cynical as what they make in America.

Paul Busato, taxi driver

My favourite Italian film is Life is Beautiful and I also like anything by Fellini. But the actor I admire most has got to be Bruce Willis. I think he’s brilliant, a real man’s man. I watched all the Die Hard films but my favourite is the one where he goes into the future.

Nicola Vescan, waiter

I’ve watched all the Alien films hundreds of times and I still think they’re the best. Venice, Berlin, Cannes are the best film festivals in the world because they’re not so commercial. I work from 3pm till midnight. Hopefully I can see something decent at Venice.

Million Dollar Baby was a good film. Clint Eastwood directed it. Anything he does I love, especially when he was an actor. The Bridges of Madison County, anything by Sergio Leone. I won’t be going to the festival because it’s always impossible to get a ticket.
