The work and pensions and business, energy and industrial strategy committees launch a new joint inquiry into the collapse of Carillion with witnesses today including trustees of the Carillion DB pension scheme. The committees will be investigating how a company that was signed off by KPMG as a going concern in spring 2017 could crash into liquidation with a reported £5 billion of liabilities and just £29 million left in cash less than a year later.

The US federal open market committee decision on interest rates is announced following its usual two-day meeting. It is the last meeting chaired by Janet Yellen before her term ends later this week. She is succeeded by Jerome Powell. The FOMC decided at its last meeting in December to raise the target range for the federal funds rate to 1.25 per cent to 1.5 per cent.
