Sir, I have every sympathy with Mr Gavin McDonald (letter, June 21) in his quest to find safe small talk that is not weather-related.
In Pygmalion, Henry Higgins assures his mother that Liza has been told to confine herself to “the weather and everybody’s health”.
However, with an increase in infertility, controversy about anti-smoking measures and a dispute over the booking of GP appointments (reports, same day), it seems we are truly stumped.
