If I can only pick one, then it’s The Usual Suspects. I didn’t spot the bad guy until frames before the reveal, and every time I’ve watched it since I’ve picked up on subtleties I’ve never seen before. Fantastic. Close runners up would be Goodfellas (a very close second), Resevoir Dogs, Fargo and the French film Doberman. Simon Clarke, Southampton
The phone rings at 3am and a pregnant woman puts on her uniform to go out into the Minnesota snow to solve a murder. The opening of the Coen brothers’ Fargo grabs us by the throat and proves to be one one of the greatest crime movies of all time. Police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) gorges on junk food, has bouts of morning sickness and speaks in a lazy, mid-western drawl. The criminals are pathetic and the landscape is astonishing. The movie’s so good they never made a sequel. John O’Byrne, Dublin
