I’m wearing a Greek fisherman’s hat, vintage 1940s trousers and a suit jacket that I had made for me in China. I drew a picture of what I wanted and the tailor laughed at me. Over there, it’s an old man’s jacket.
My girlfriend made me this silk scarf, and I bought the bag for £1 in a market. Playing in various bands has made me dress up more. I’m only an amateur, but I try to look the part. Now I have a mishmash of different styles — I’d say the overall look is “Corsican postman”. My top style tip would be looking smart in places where it’s least expected — backpacking in the tropics, for instance. I love wearing tweed abroad because it’s so British, and I always take shoe polish away with me. I’m fussy about what girls should wear, but I’m not proud of that — my girlfriend gets quite angry with me. I used to wear a strange combination when I was at university: an Elmer Fudd hat, a 7 Up jacket, dungarees and espadrilles. It’s funny to look back at your past.
