What a gas

Sir, I was surprised to be informed that Kryptonite, the luminescent green rock which weakens the powers of our best-known superhero, has been classified as an element (times2 quiz, June 16).

I do not remember it from my school chemistry lessons. I do recall one known as krypton, but I’m pretty sure that was a gas which, being almost inert, had no discernible effect on the ability to beat a speeding bullet.
