West Indies A routed as Benham cements future

SOUTHAMPTON (West Indies A won toss): Hampshire bt West Indies A by 62 runs

THERE was one touring side keen to continue playing yesterday, even though for much of their limited-overs match they looked likely to be trounced (Ivo Tennant writes). Chris Benham, who is out of contract at the end of the season, struck 122 off 145 balls in a Hampshire innings that was sufficient to beat West Indies A.

Benham, who put on 123 in 23 overs with Michael Brown, is likely to be retained next year — he is batting above Dominic Thornely in championship matches. His innings included 16 fours. Other than Brown’s 44, there was some bold hitting from Mitchell Stokes, who made 36 from 18 balls, with seven fours.

West Indies A lost two early wickets and two more in one over of off spin from Greg Lamb. That they managed to make a reasonable total, as opposed to giving themselves a chance of victory, owed much to Runako Morton striking a century off 113 balls, including seven fours and two sixes.
