Sir, The correspondence on F E Smith (letter, Aug 27) and matters legal must not peter out without touching on what I believe to be one of his better remarks. A judge, having been subjected to one of Smith’s lengthy perorations at the end of a particularly complex case, said: “Mr Smith, I have listened to you for a considerable time but I must confess that I am none the wiser.”
“Possibly not, m’lud,” F E replied, “but you are probably better informed.”
