It is easy to take for granted plants that live in tubs or containers: box, maples, camellias, conifers. They especially need feeding because they cannot spread their roots into new soil. So scatter the roots with a light dressing of a general fertiliser, preferably slow-release, and scratch it into the soil’s surface. Read the packet; don’t overdose them.
Look for new seedlings under established hellebores. They transplant better when they are in their second year, so move the larger ones to permanent homes.
Warm days mean that it’s time to sow grass seed, so prepare the ground by forking it over lightly, to a depth of only 3-4in (7-10cm), and break down the lumps until it is smooth and friable.
Hydrangea paniculata is pruned now, to an open framework; it will flower on the ends of this year’s shoots.
