Webb fails to snare final spot

Shirley Webb, captain of the Great Britain athletics team, had a disappointing time in the hammer this morning, failing to make the final 12 after registering only one throw out of three.

The 22-year-old started her campaign with a throw of 61.60 metres, almost six metres less than her best, but then hit the cage with her next two efforts.

Webb was disappointed that her Olympic experience was over so quickly and said: ”I loved the experience but you just want another half a dozen throws to stay out there. My first throw was just a bit slow and then I turned it up on the next two and unfortunately hit the cage. Sometimes I have a fault using my arms and when I do that I hook it and that’s what happened.”

Team-mate Lorraine Shaw was in the second pool and started her hammer campaign with 63.06m - just after the Olympic record had been broken by Russia’s Olga Kuzenkova with 73.71m.

The Sale Harrier improved marginally to 63.13m with her second throw but that was still not going to be good enough to get her anywhere near the top 12.
