Sir, I was delighted to hear John Humphrys’s weather forecast on Radio 4 recently: “Rain in the west, sunny with showers elsewhere.” Accurate or not, it was more succinct than the rambling guff we suffer from professional forecasters — “Fingers of rain pushing in”, “banks of cloud bubbling up” — at the end of which we never know what the weather is actually going to do.
