Weak at the knees

Sir, The Government has struggled to find an appropriate test to assess British citizenship applicants. I would like to suggest the Elgar test. Candidates would first be required to listen to Nimrod. If they do not go weak at the knees, become fearful, quivering of lip or lumpy of throat, they would proceed to the second test: readings of Brooke’s Soldier and Blake’s Jerusalem.

If candidates still remain unmoved, perhaps Britain is not for them. If hopefuls have to be picked sobbing from the floor, they should be granted citizenship without delay.
