Sir, While I deplore the wanton vandalism that caused the English couple in Scotland to have their windows smashed because an English flag was displayed there (report, June 14), I would be interested to know how long a German flag would remain unscathed in an English window. Would we support Germany if they were the last European team left in the competition? I think not.
Many English people, like myself, are supporting England in the World Cup, but dread them winning because of the rampant gloating bordering on xenophobia that will no doubt entail.

Sir, Jack McConnell is not the only leader to have failed to endorse the England team at the World Cup. I have also noticed a singular lack of support from President Sir Anerood Jugnauth of Mauritius. I will therefore be cancelling my holiday to Port Louis forthwith. At least in Skegness I can guarantee we are all backing our boys.
