Heather Watson is closing in on the third WTA title of her career after beating Caroline Garcia to reach the final of the Monterrey Open in Mexico.

The 23-year-old British No 2, who beat Caroline Wozniacki in the quarter-finals on Friday, beat her French opponent for the loss of only three games. Watson won 6-1, 6-2 and will now meet Kirsten Flipkens in the final. Flipkens beat Anett Kontaveit 7-6, 6-4.

Watson has lost her previous two career meetings with Flipkens but, if she can reverse that trend, can add to the titles she won in Japan in October 2012 and Hobart in January 2015.

This was Watson’s third career win over Garcia and came with the minimum of fuss. She sent down five aces and was particularly efficient on her first serve, winning 86 per cent of the points.
