I’d like to get into the new spring colours, but, like most people, I have a lot of black in my closet. What works best with it (some combos look dated) and how can I update without buying a whole new wardrobe?
As seen at Preen (1 £494), prints containing a bit of black are probably the easiest segue into this spring’s full-on colour explosion. A top such as this one, from Reiss (2 £95), would work well with black trousers or a pencil skirt; or you could try one of DVF’s colour-pop minis (3 £203; matchesfashion.com) with a black blouse. Pastels are big this season, and a more modern pairing with black than your standard jewel tones. These jeans, by Mother Denim (4 £207), or this printed skirt from Reiss (5 £95) would work well with a black knit now or a T-shirt when it gets warmer. These shoes from Zara (6 £60) will tie the look together.

I want a maxiskirt that’s a bit more casual than evening wear, and won’t dwarf my 5ft 2in frame. Can you recommend something that would work, given my height?
Skirts that graze your ankles rather than plunge to the floor, paired with high wedges, will add height rather than swamp your frame. The stripes in this number, from River Island (7 £25), have a lengthening effect and would look great with a simple knit; or check out Topshop’s pretty pastels (8 £48). You could flash a bit of leg with this skirt by Mason by Michelle Mason (9 £175), which will make you look taller. Finish off with heels from Kurt Geiger (10 £195) and you have your maxi look sorted.
I’m a sucker for comfortable shoes and want something on trend. What do you suggest?
The front-row flat of choice at the recent catwalk shows was a man’s slipper. These KG Kurt Geiger studded leopard-print ones tick all the trend boxes (11 £120), or check out these glitter pumps from Topshop (12 £30).
