Wardrobe mistress

In September, my girlfriend and I are having a civil partnership ceremony. I’m the dykey one in the couple, but I know my girlfriend wants me to wear a dress and heels. I’ve been practising in a low pair, but I look like a man in drag. I would feel more comfortable in a trouser suit, but I’m unsure which way to go.

Ask bridezilla to back off, it’s your big day, too, and you need to make sure you get hitched in an outfit that makes you feel fab. Personally, I think a bride in a suit and a pair of statement brogues can look modern and sexy. There are two options: go slimline or channel Haider Ackermann (1 £2,446) in a draped suit in an elegant fabric. This cream ensemble from Reiss (2 £315) is a good option, paired with snake-print loafers from Kurt Geiger (3 £180). Or Topshop has this chiffon suit (4 £115), which would be just the thing worn with Kurt Geiger glitter lace-ups (5 £110).

My daughter is 6ft 1in, broad across the shoulders and a size 16/18. She does a lot of outdoor swimming and is having difficulty finding a decent swimsuit. Can you help?

I’ve picked a selection of swimsuits, all of which go up to a size 18 and are long in the body. A halterneck will make her look bulky, so she should opt for something streamlined and on the simple side where print and colour are concerned. This swimsuit from Debenhams (5 £33) gives good coverage, while still being a bit glam. George at Asda has this illusion suit (6 £14), or for something simple, how about this one from Evans (7 £28).

I have been invited to my granddaughter’s graduation in July. As I spend a large part of the year on my boat, I don’t have many smart clothes. I am 69, size 16 and I love trousers.

It will be warm in July, so try a loose pair of palazzo pants and a linen jacket. This suit from Hobbs (8 £206) is flattering and lightweight. You may have to wear the jacket open as you say you have an ample bosom, in which case invest in a white top with a demure neckline to wear underneath, such as this Karen Millen embroidered blouse (9 £105).
