Sir, I am concerned at the Government’s plans to commemorate the Falklands conflict on the 25th anniversary. I hope that the events will all be extremely sensitive to the feelings not only of people connected with those who fought for Britain, but also of people connected with those on the Argentine side.
I have recently spent four weeks in Argentina staying in several different families in seven towns. In my discussions I became convinced that they had not wanted the war. They had a military dictatorship at the time, which needed a war, so one was found. Thankfully that situation has now changed.
If these arguments do not persuade the Government to be sensitive, then surely it must realise that Britain needs to remain on friendly terms with Argentina for the sake of trade and our standing in the world.
