Victor Wanyama has been left out of Southampton’s match against Norwich City today as questions grow about his future at the south coast club.
The midfielder trained yesterday but was not included in the squad named by Ronald Koeman, the club’s manager. Wanyama has told the club that he wants to leave with two years left on his deal amid strong interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who are looking for a defensive midfielder.
It is not known whether Wanyama does not want to play today or was not picked. However he has recovered from the stomach infection that caused him to miss the defeat away to FC Midtjylland as Southampton were knocked out of the Europa League play-off in Denmark on Thursday.
Koeman discovered on Wednesday morning that Wanyama would not be flying to Denmark. He was seen by a club doctor a day earlier and referred to a hospital. Koeman has made plain that neither Wanyama nor Sadio Mané, who is reported to be a Manchester United target, would be sold before the transfer window closed on Tuesday.
Tottenham initially considered Moussa Sissoko, the Newcastle United midfielder, and it is likely to be a busy few days at White Hart Lane. The north London club still hope to sign another striker but have ruled out interest in Alexandre Pato, whose agent has arrived in London to try and find a club for the Corinthians player who is on loan at São Paulo.
