A waitress in Arkansas was sacked after being forced to share a $4,400 tip with all staff at the restaurant.

Ryan Brandt and a colleague served a group of more than 40 diners at the Oven and Tap in Bentonville. Each member of the party tipped Brandt and her colleague $100, believing that the money would go to the servers.

The restaurant’s manager allegedly told Brandt to share the money with other colleagues, however, an arrangement that the waitress said was unprecedented in her more than three years working there, according to a local television station.

Grant Wise, one of the diners, asked for his tip back after hearing of the manager’s request. He then handed $2,200 to Brandt, who said she was sacked the next day.

“It was devastating, I borrowed a significant amount for student loans,” she said. Brandt claims that she was let go because she told the customer about the restaurant’s tips policy.

In a statement the restaurant said it “fully honoured” the customers’ request to give the tips to two servers but declined to discuss Brandt’s dismissal.
