Voting rights

It is hardly democratic that power to override statute law of national legislatures should rest with unelected judges

Sir, The assertion (letter, June 2) that allowing prisoners to vote is a fundamental right “at the very heart of any democratic system” is questionable. Further, it is hardly democratic that power to override statute law of national legislatures should rest with unelected judges at Strasbourg, especially as they are drawn from a range of national jurisdictions.

The last word on whether or not to comply with Strasbourg judgments should rest with elected national legislatures.
