Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Vinson & Elkins opened its London office in 1971, making it one of the first American firms to operate in the UK. Its London office handles disputes, including international arbitration and High Court litigation, energy transactions and projects, finance, mergers and acquisitions, private equity and tax matters.

Vinson & Elkins is representing the Panama Canal Authority in a series of arbitrations arising out of complex, high-value and technical construction disputes with Grupo Unidos por el Canal, a consortium of European and Panamanian companies hired to design and build a third set of locks as part of the Panama Canal expansion project.

In March 2023, a team led from the firm’s Dubai office successfully represented the Republic of Iraq in an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration against the Republic of Turkey, arising out of Turkey’s violations of an agreement for the supply and purchase of crude oil concluded between the countries in 1973. Iraq prevailed on its interpretation of the key treaty provisions and Turkey was ordered to pay net damages.

A team led from Vinson & Elkins’ London office advised Uzbekneftegaz and Uzbekistan GTL on the sale to Air Products of a natural gas-to-syngas processing facility in Uzbekistan for $1 billion. The sale, which closed in May, was the largest M&A transaction in Uzbekistan’s history.
