Viggo Mortensen's poetic licence exposed

Famed for roles in Lord of the Rings, Eastern Promises and now starring in the Oscar-tipped The Road, a post-apocalyptic tale of murder and cannibalism, Hollywood hero Viggo Mortensen, 51, has a lesser-known, more flowery string to his bow: he's a poet.

His first collection, Ten Last Night, was published in 1993, when he was becoming a sought-after actor; it includes poems that begin with the lines 'You are sweating in your sleep' and 'Oceans take our secrets'.

The actor went on to publish several books of his own photography, poetry and painting, and even set up his own imprint, Perceval Press, to help writers and artists whose work may go unnoticed.

Oh, and if that wasn't all, he also speaks Spanish, Danish, French, Swedish and Italian.

Poet, actor and patron of the arts: Viggo, we salute you.
