Dog owners have been told to check their pets for symptoms of a flesh-rotting disease after vets in Midlothian confirmed the first fatality.

There have been three cases of Alabama rot in the past 12 months, according to University of Edinburgh’s Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. The disease, also known as CRGV, is picked up on dogs’ paws and legs during muddy walks.

The first case in Britain was found three years ago. As well as skin ulcers, symptoms include tiredness, reduced appetite, urinating and vomiting.
