Jan Vertonghen is expected to be out for between six and eight weeks after he sustained ligament damage to his left ankle in the victory over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

The Tottenham Hotspur centre back will miss at least seven league matches, including the game away to Manchester City on Saturday and the match at Anfield against Liverpool on February 11. He will also miss the two-legged tie against Gent in the Europa League round of 32 next month.

Vertonghen suffered a similar injury during Euro 2016 that ruled him out of Belgium’s quarter-final defeat by Wales. “Thanks to everyone for your kind messages,” he said. “Gutted to be injured but will be back as soon as I can.”

Tottenham must tell the FA in March whether they will play at Wembley Stadium next season. The club have an agreement to move to the national stadium on a temporary basis while White Hart Lane is rebuilt.
