Versace has designs on float

VERSACE could soon be strutting its stuff on the Milan stock exchange.

The fashion label is poised for a float that would value it at up to €1 billion (£800m). The brand has been tempted to go public by the recent listings of rivals such as Brunello Cucinelli, the Italian cashmere brand, and Michael Kors.

Milan-based Versace is controlled by the family, including designer Donatella, 57, sister of late founder Gianni. She owns the group with her brother Santo, 67, and her daughter Allegra, 25, who has 50% and joined the board last year.

Versace, known for flamboyant gowns worn by stars such as Madonna, returned to profit last year for the first time since 2009. It posted earnings of €8.5m on revenues of €340.2m in 2011 compared with €292.3m in 2010.

The family may also consider a bond issue or stake sale. “The management is studying some advice, but no solution has yet been decided," said Gian Giacomo Ferraris, Versace chief executive.
