Prosecco, everyone’s favourite summer-party fizz, is made in a small pocket of northeast Italy largely unspoilt by mass tourism. Stretching northwards from the volcanic hills of Padua, with Lake Garda to the west and Venice to the east, this is perfect country for touring. Ancient churches, medieval squares, friendly trattorie and fine-dining restaurants abound in this rugged, diverse region — the three Michelin-starred Le Calandre in Rubano is worth the trip alone. Hole up in an agriturismo or, if you’re feeling energetic, climb to the top of the vineyards in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene, from where you can just make out the blue waters of the Venetian lagoon.
