Bossa Cabana
(Tropical Music)
It was 50 years ago this summer that Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes met in Copacabana and the sensuous, sultry sound of bossa nova was born. This 18-track Brazilian birthday celebration brings together first- and second-generation stars to revive some of the music’s best-loved anthems.
There’s not an electronic remix or drum’n’bossa retooling to be heard, just timelessly smooth takes on such Jobim masterpieces as Desafinado, Garota de Ipanema and So Danço Samba. The veteran guitarists Roberto Menescal and Carlos Lyra are particularly outstanding, while among the younger brigade the thrilling voices of Cris Delanno and Marcela Mangabeira prove that the spirit of bossa nova remains eternal.
