US seizes assets of Muslim charity allegedly controlled by Iran

The US Government moved to seize four American mosques and a prime New York skyscraper owned by a Muslim charity allegedly controlled by Iran.

Prosecutors said in a civil forfeiture suit that the New York-based Alavi Foundation was secretly controlled by Iranian diplomats in the United Nations.

The Muslim charity was accused of managing the 36-storey office block at 650 Fifth Avenue for the Iranian Government and funnelling rental income to Iran’s state-owned Bank Melli in violation of US sanctions. Experts said it was rare for the US to try to seize a religious institution.
