US flights not covered

Sandra Smith of Woodbridge had a claim for a missed flight turned down by Aviva, because it did not originate or terminate in the UK

I flew from London to Cancun via Philadelphia and Charlotte, but a snow delay of five hours in America meant I missed my connection and had to stay the night in Charlotte. My insurer, Aviva, told me it compensates only for delays on flights out of or into the UK, so turned down my claim. I found this extraordinary. I asked for confirmation that a round-the-world ticket, all with one airline, would be covered for delay only on the first and final legs. I was told this was indeed the case.

Aviva replies: “Delayed-departure benefit does relate only to journeys that start and end in the UK. The policy wording clearly outlines the terms and conditions. This is fairly standard across the industry. It may be possible to approach the airline to provide compensation.”
