Leaving aside his notion that a country’s influence at the UN should be proportionate to its financial contribution, it is now clear that America intends to use the proposed, and undeniably necessary, reform of the UN either to provide a rubber stamp for its foreign policy adventures, or to marginalise it.
That Bolton is motivated by a “fortress America” mentality is clear from his assertion that the US is the only member to be criticised when it ignores the UN. Other members, Israel for example, are regularly criticised for ignoring UN resolutions. And the world rages, not because America does or doesn’t act, but because self- interest appears to be the only criterion for decision-making.
