Universal Credit

The transition to Universal Credit will be gradual and care must be taken to ensure that this process is handled correctly

Sir, Contrary to your report that Universal Credit faces “fresh delays” (report, June 1), we have always been clear that Universal Credit will be phased in gradually. Just last week we announced that we will roll out Universal Credit early in the Greater Manchester and Cheshire region from April 2013, with the rest of the country coming on stream from October that year. It’s of vital importance that we get this transition right and we’re working with Jobcentres, local authorities and employers across the country to ensure this happens. Our commitment to reforming the welfare system and making work pay is unwavering.
