It is difficult to establish any firm criteria to distinguish the difference between a pub and a bar

Sir, My local history group was recently discussing the difference between a pub and a bar. Although I feel I can distinguish between the two quite easily, it is difficult to establish any firm criteria to support the perceived difference. I would think that a pub should have to serve hand-pulled real ale, and probably have a traditional inn sign, too, but apart from that, what makes a pub a pub?
