Turnover £135.6 million

Trowers & Hamlins is a City law firm that also spreads across the regions with offices in Manchester, Exeter and Birmingham — while running four outposts in the Persian Gulf and one in Malaysia.

In September the firm revealed that it had nearly doubled its borrowings from £6 million to £11.3 million to fund investment to ensure that it bats away any takeover attempts. Sara Bailey, the senior partner, told The Lawyer website that while “growth for growth’s sake is dangerous, we have adopted a growth strategy because we want to retain and attract the best staff and we need to remunerate properly to do that. Also, being brutally honest, we want to stay independent. That means we need to make sure we’re financially robust enough in five years so that we can stand alone.”

Recently the firm has advised on several group actions on behalf of international creditors arising from failed UK property investment schemes. The firm also advised the diocese of Gloucester on establishing a Church of England housing association.

Commended for commercial property; insolvency & restructuring
