Triosk

The Headlight Serenade

(Leaf)

This Australian trio, whose music hovers between spacy Pink Floyd and Steve Reich, are busy winning friends with their second album.

An electronics-assisted piano, bass and drums group, they specialise in lengthy shimmering moodscapes that are big on atmosphere. Much of the music is centred on the propulsive drumming of Laurence Pike, and Triosk are probably tired of comparisons with fellow Aussie minimalists the Necks. When they work, the band’s slowly unfolding epics can build to a shimmering beauty; at other times you may nod off. In fact, it’s the relatively busy opener, Visions IV, that I’ve returned to most. Still, even the greatest space journey must have its dull moments.
