Tried and tested

It’s a case of the darker the better for nails this season, so treat yours to a covering of deep burgundy polish. Style’s 25-strong panel gives the lowdown on which to choose.

1. Leighton Denny Nail Colour in Vamp, £10; 0845 004 2053

Several found this one rather runny, although most liked the dark colour and said it lasted well, even with just one coat.

2. OPI Nail Lacquer in Mrs O’Leary’s BBQ, £8.95; www.lenawhite.co.uk

Testers liked this “rouge noir” shade and found it was easy to apply. However, it chipped fairly quickly.

3. Essie Nail Polish in Poor Lil Rich Girl, £7.50; 020 8906 9090

Testers said this one was effortless to apply, dried quickly and lasted the longest. The only problem was the colour — it was too red to be considered burgundy.

4. Rimmel Lycra Wear Nail Polish in Desire, £3.99

Some liked the dark, metallic aubergine colour; others didn’t. Many found it chipped easily, although it painted on smoothly.
