Travel Clinic: Statue of Liberty

Should Brenda Cross of Cardiff buy tickets to visit the Statue of Liberty in advance? How do you know the website is genuine?

My husband and I are going on our first trip to New York in October. We have been advised to book tickets for the Statue of Liberty in advance, online, to avoid queuing — but how do I know that the website I’m looking at is genuine and not a scam site?
Brenda Cross, Cardiff

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is something of a mission, with numbers strictly limited to 12,000 a day for Liberty Island and 3,000 a day to climb the stone pedestal of the statue; only 240 people are allowed in her crown. The best information is on the official site, nps.gov/stli. You’ll pay £8pp for the ferry and the pedestal; with the crown, it’s £11. Tickets sell out many months in advance, so act now. Even with a ticket, queues of two hours are common. Note that the crown and pedestal will be closed from October 29 for refurbishment. And good luck!
