Sir, I wrote recently to the managing director of my train company to complain about the reduction in the rush-hour train service to and from my local station.
I received an acknowledgement saying that the managing director likes to reply personally. When the letter arrived the jaunty salutation “Dear McIntosh” seemed to start things on the right foot. It went on:
I have a vague sense that my complaint has been acknowledged as technically correct but judged, by virtue of its focus on my own circumstances, as morally unsound. It’s hard to be sure.
