Tottenham Hotspur have moved closer to a £47 million deal to sign Cristian Romero, the Argentina defender.

Romero, the 23-year-old Atalanta centre back, would become Tottenham’s second-biggest signing after Tanguy Ndombélé, who cost an initial £56 million from Lyons in 2019, and the club’s third summer arrival after Bryan Gil and Pierluigi Gollini.

Tottenham are also interested in the Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traoré, who played under their new head coach, Nuno Espírito Santo.

The Spurs players will return to training today but Harry Kane is not due to start fitness work until tomorrow if he returns a negative test for Covid-19. He will restate his determination to leave when he speaks to the club this week.

Manchester City have told Spurs that they are willing to offer £100 million for the England captain but the north London club value him significantly higher and say they have no intention of selling the forward this summer.

Lyons have joined Napoli in making an enquiry for Emerson, the Chelsea left back who has a year left on his deal. The 26-year-old has started just 23 league matches since his £17 million move from Roma in January 2018 and is behind Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso in the pecking order. He replaced the injured Leandro Spinazzola to help Italy win Euro 2020.

Gary Cahill, 35, has left Crystal Palace after he turned down a new contract. Watford have expressed an interest in Jesse Joronen, the Brescia and Finland goalkeeper.

Inter Milan have valued Lautaro Martínez at £68 million after interest from Arsenal.

● Russell Martin has left MK Dons and been appointed Swansea City’s new head coach on a three-year deal.
