Tottenham close in on Ghaly and plan late move for Murphy

TOTTENHAM Hotspur are confident of completing a deal today for Hossam Ghaly, the Feyenoord and Egypt midfield player, and have made a late move to sign Danny Murphy. Spurs tried to sign Murphy at the start of last season, but the midfield player turned them down in favour of Charlton Athletic.

Murphy was also wanted by Newcastle United but an offer of Amdy Faye in exchange was rejected by Charlton, who wanted Lee Bowyer in addition to money.

Tottenham agreed to sell Michael Brown, who has started only two Barclays Premiership matches this season, to Fulham last night for about £1.5 million. Fulham are not pursuing an interest in Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Wayne Routledge has become the fourth player to leave Tottenham for Portsmouth this month. The winger, who has failed to regain his first-team place after recovering from a foot injury, has moved on loan. Portsmouth have also signed Ognjen Koroman, the Terek Groznyi and Serbia and Montenegro midfield player, and are monitoring Andres D’Alessandro, who has been dropped by VfL Wolfsburg.

West Ham United remain hopeful of signing Gabri from Barcelona. The Spain midfield player, who can also play at right back, could sign a three-year deal if a fee can be reached. If not, West Ham might look again at Marcin Baszcyznski, the Wisla Krakow and Poland right back who was on trial at the club recently.

Martin Latka, the Czech Republic Under-21 defender, will be in the Birmingham City squad for the match against Liverpool tomorrow after signing on loan for the rest of the season from Slavia Prague. Birmingham want Jason Euell on loan until the end of the season after pulling out of a deal to sign the forward for £1.5 million from Charlton. Middlesbrough are also interested in Euell. Jonatan Johansson and Francis Jeffers are expected to leave Charlton on loan moves today, with the latter poised to join Blackburn Rovers.

David Moyes, the Everton manager, is considering a late move for Dave Nugent, whom Preston North End value at £5 million. Johan Elmander has said that he would consider a move to Wigan Athletic but Brondby do not want to sell.

West Bromwich Albion hope to sign Williams Martinez on loan from Defensor Sporting, of Uruguay, with a view to a permanent £2 million move in the summer, and remain optimistic of agreeing personal terms with Nigel Quashie, the midfield player, after agreeing a £1.5 million fee with Southampton.

Southampton and Norwich City have expressed an interest in signing Robert Earnshaw, who has had two transfer requests turned down by West Bromwich. Norwich are trying to sign Calum Davenport, the Tottenham defender. Michael Ricketts has joined Burnley on loan until the end of the season from Leeds United. Dion Dublin, who cancelled his contract by mutual consent with Leicester City, has moved to Celtic.
