Torremolinos 73

15, 94mins

Pablo Berger, the director of Torremolinos 73, has a sharp eye for the period details of early 1970s Spain and a nice central idea. Alfredo, a struggling encyclopaedia salesman, is persuaded by his boss to take part in their new business venture — amateur pornography, sold for “educational” purposes to Scandinavia.

Alfredo and his wife Carmen try their best for the camera, and in doing so discover new vocations. Carmen becomes a star in Denmark and Alfredo harbours aspirations to be a serious film-maker. Unfortunately, this porno spoof reaches its climax too early, losing much of its comic thrust be the later stages, when Alfredo tries to make a Bergman-inspired art-house movie.
