26. CHARLIE CARTER
ROY OF THE ROVERS
Carter joined Melchester Rovers in 1973 as cover for Tubby Morton, the goalkeeper, who had broken his leg. Carter’s exceptional agility earned him the nickname “The Cat”, but in 1974 he lost his place in the side because he was torn between football and a career as a pop star. After Morton retired, Carter settled in as Melchester’s No 1 and played with Roy Race for England in 1978. He lost his place in the 1984-85 season but made a dramatic first-team return in the 1992 FA Cup tie with Burndean. He is now a popular after-dinner speaker and pundit.
