Tom Daley has revealed the finished Team GB jumper that he was seen knitting poolside at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The 27-year-old British diver showed off his latest project on his wool-dominated offshoot Instagram account @madewithlovebytomdaley.

“When I got to Tokyo, I wanted to make something that would remind me of the Olympics to look back on in the future,” he wrote. “I designed a pattern for the colour work that would signify everything about these games!”

The jumper has a Team GB logo and the Olympic rings on the back, a Union Jack and GBR on the shoulders and Tokyo in Japanese characters embroidered on the front.

Daley posted a video of himself modelling the knitwear and asking for his followers’ opinions, adding: “But be nice.” He also posted it on his main Instagram account and said he was trying to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity for his father, who died of cancer in 2011, aged 40.

Daley won his first Olympic gold medal on July 26 with Matty Lee in the men’s 10-metre synchronised diving competition. He is due to compete in the men’s 10-metre platform event tomorrow.

Since then he has attracted attention for his knitting on the sidelines at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. He was shown by the BBC in the spectators’ area making a dog jumper in pink, cream and mauve yarn.

“What do you reckon he’s crafting there?” Katherine Downes asked during her commentary of the women’s 3-metre springboard final for the BBC. “I wonder who he’s making that purple concoction for?”

Daley later wrote on social media that it was a “doggy jumper” for a friend. “It is the cutest little pattern to follow by @knittingland. How cute do they all look?! I was making another one at the pool yesterday.”

Team GB also tweeted a photograph of him knitting: “Nothing to see here — just @TomDaley1994 having a knit at the diving.”

Daley’s knitting Instagram account has grown from 250,000 followers to nearly one million during the Olympics and his main account has three million followers.
