Classic Match

The match between Fischer and Spassky for the World Chess Championship in 1972 made headlines around the world. Fischer’s victory in a game which the USSR had made its own presaged the eventual collapse of communism in that it exposed the first virtually imperceptible chinks in the armour of the Soviet collective chess and sporting juggernaut. It was no accident that Dr. Henry Kissinger himself contacted Fischer before the 1972 match for the world title against Boris Spassky to encourage the American to gain the Championship for the free world.
