Tobias Froberg

Somewhere In The City

(Poptones)

It’s either a cute irony or smart marketing that the opener When The Night Turns Cold is being used to advertise swish technological jiggery-pokery (digital cameras et al), given that Froberg’s own approach is palpably lo-fi.

With songs recorded straight to tape in sunny gardens or on old sofas, pianos creak and acoustic guitars reverberate warmly as Froberg builds up rickety momentum on the bedsit gospel of On God’s Highway and clap-happy pop of Somewhere in the City. And though this can occasionally verge on the wincingly fey, it is a sweetly idiosyncratic diversion of a record.
