1987: Daniel Morgan murdered shortly after meeting his business partner Jonathan Rees for a drink. Detective Sergeant Sid Fillery, initially part of the first murder inquiry team, is among those arrested but not charged.

1988: Mr Fillery medically discharged from the Met and becomes Rees’s new business partner; Hampshire Police launch second inquiry into the murder.

1989: Three people arrested for the murder; Rees is charged but charges are later dropped.

1994: Two police officers receive substantial damages from the Met for false imprisonment after being accused of the murder.

1997: Sir Paul Condon, the Met’s Commissioner, promises to review the case again.

1999: Third inquiry uncovers allegations of police corruption and illegal activities at Southern Investigations but not of murder.

2000: Rees jailed for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice after plotting to plant cocaine on a woman to destroy her chances of winning a child custody battle.

2001: Fourth inquiry opens and listening devices are again planted.

2005: Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair admits the first murder inquiry was “compromised”. Met criticised by its police authority and in Parliament. Fifth inquiry led by Detective Superintendent Dave Cook, began in secret concentrating on recruiting criminal supergrasses.

2008: Mr Fillery, Rees, the Vian brothers and Jimmy Cook arrested in connection with the murder.

2009: Legal arguments begin before Mr Justice Maddison at the Old Bailey.

2011: Case finally collapses over allegations of non-disclosure of evidence.
