Tim Cahill could make a remarkable return to Millwall, 20 years after beginning his professional career with the club. The veteran Australia forward is understood to have flown to England to finalise a deal that would enable him to play in the Championship fixture against Derby County on Tuesday.
Cahill, 38, made his name with the south London club before moving to Everton for a successful eight-year career. Spells in the United States and China followed before he went back to Australia, where he played for Melbourne City before leaving last month.
His aim now is to cement a place in the Australia squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia. Neil Harris, the Millwall manager who was Cahill’s team-mate from 1998 to 2004, has confirmed that the club had been in talks with the forward.
Rafael Benítez has told Brighton & Hove Albion to forget signing Aleksandar Mitrovic this month even if they meet the asking price for the striker.
Brighton are understood to have tested the water with a bid of about £7 million, less than half what Newcastle paid Anderlecht for Mitrovic in July 2015, but Benítez is determined he will not be sold to a rival whatever the offer.

He said: “It was clear to him and his agent, if we can bring a striker in then we can consider anything — apart from the Premier League. If we can’t bring in a striker, then we have to consider carefully because we need players.”
Darren Bent has moved to Burton Albion on loan from Derby. The 33-year-old former England striker will spend the remainder of the campaign with Burton but is yet to appear this term having suffered a hamstring issue.
